Website traffic definition

Website traffic refers to the number of visitors who are visiting your site. This traffic can come from various sources, including search engines, social media, and referrals from other websites. It is important to know how you are getting traffic in order to see which methods work best for you.

Types

  1. Direct traffic

Direct traffic is the number of visitors who come to your website by typing your URL into their browser or clicking on a bookmark. This is the most basic form of traffic and it’s important to track because it gives you an idea of how many people are aware of your site.

  1. Referral traffic

Referral traffic is the traffic that comes to your website from other websites. This can happen when someone clicks on a link from another site that takes them to your site, or when someone sees your site listed on another site and clicks on it.

  1. Organic traffic

Organic traffic is the traffic that comes to your website through search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo. This type of traffic is free, and it’s based on your website’s content and ranking in the search engine results pages (SERPs).

  1. Social traffic

Social traffic is the traffic that comes from people visiting your website after seeing it shared on social media. This can be a great way to increase traffic to your website, as long as you have interesting and shareable content.

Website traffic – why is it so important for SEO?

Organic website traffic is extremely important for SEO because it indicates to search engines that your site is popular and relevant. The more traffic you have, the higher your site will rank in search engine results pages, and the more likely people are to find and visit your site. Website traffic is the lifeblood of any online business. It’s how you get people to see your content, interact with your brand, and ultimately convert them into customers.

How to check traffic on your website?

In the case of Google Search Console, we can check real-time traffic, data about users in the “Audiences” tab, traffic source in the “Acquisition” section and evaluate the behavior on the website with the help of the “Behaviors and Conversions” report.

If we care about data from Google Analytics, it is best to use the “Effectiveness” report. There you will find information on the number of clicks on a given link, devices used by Internet users, phrases generating the most traffic and the country from which the traffic comes from. These two tools are especially important for SEO specialists because they are the only ones that represent real traffic. Data obtained using other methods are estimates, which does not mean that it is not worth consulting them. You can find there various reports:

  • real-time, i.e. information about traffic from a specific moment,
  • recipients – their gender, age, location, device and browser,
  • sourcing, talking about where our internet users come from,
  • behavior – how much time and what elements of the website users use,
  • conversion and bounce rate.

How to check traffic on the competition’s website?

Navigating the online world requires website owners to track competitor sites in order to check their position. In this case, we can use tools such as Senuto, Semstorm and Ahrefs. In the case of Senuto, we will be most interested in the visibility analysis, which informs you about the phrases, the seasonality of the site and the estimated number of users per month. Semstorm focuses primarily on keywords and their recognition in the context of organic search results. Ahrefs, on the other hand, is primarily used to analyze the link profile. There we will find data on subpages generating the most traffic, mobile devices and forecasts for the website.

The bigger the better - ways to improve traffic

Write better titles

Your title is the first thing potential readers see, so make sure it’s eye-catching and informative. A good title will give them a general idea of what your post is about and make them want to learn more. It can also help with search engine optimization by telling Google or other search engines what your blog post is about.

Have a more descriptive and unique meta description

Your website’s meta description is one of the first things potential visitors will see when they find your site in a search engine. Make sure it’s unique and accurately describes what your site is about, so people will be more likely to click through. If you’ve got an e-commerce store, don’t just use your product descriptions.

Use more relevant tags

If you want to attract more visitors to your website, you need to use relevant tags. Tags are keywords that describe your content and help search engines match your content with relevant searches. You can also use social media to promote your content, guest post on other blogs, and even run ads.

Choose right keywords

When it comes to improving website traffic, one of the most important things you can do is choose the right keywords. Keywords are the words and phrases that people use when they search for information online. If you choose keywords that are relevant to your business and use them throughout your website, you’ll be more likely to attract visitors who are actually interested in what you have to offer.

Add social media buttons

Buttons make it easy for visitors to share your content on their favorite social media platforms, which can lead to more clicks and more traffic. A recent study showed that 94% of internet users are active on at least one social media platform.

Implement internal linking

Make sure your website is well-linked. Add links to your pages in the navigation bar and throughout the site. This will help visitors move around your site and find the information they need. Use keyword-rich anchor text when you link to other pages on your site.

Submit your site to directories

One great way to get your site in front of more eyes is to submit it to online directories. This helps potential customers find your business when they’re searching for products or services like yours. Plus, it can help improve your search engine ranking.

Optimize your website for mobile users

Did you know that over 60% of internet traffic is now from mobile devices? So if your website isn’t optimized for mobile users, you’re missing out on a huge chunk of potential traffic! To optimize your site, follow these steps. Install Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test Tool, double-check your page load time, use responsive design, and make sure there are no issues with images and text formatting.

Get comments from readers

As a website owner, it’s important to encourage comments from your readers. Comments show that people are engaged with your content and help create a sense of community. Plus, when you reply to comments, you’re more likely to get repeat visitors. According to one study, 84% of consumers read reviews because they know the person who wrote them knows what they’re talking about.

Post regularly

Posting regularly is one of the best ways to boost your website traffic. Consistent updates let your readers know that you’re an active, reliable source of information, and it helps keep them coming back for more.

How often should you post content? 1-2 times per week is recommended. There are other factors that will affect your frequency such as how much time you have to write and promote your posts and what type of content you are publishing. Also think about the best time to post during the day – check the traffic level on your website in Google tools here.

Summary

No matter what business you’re in, website traffic is important. If you’re not getting enough traffic, you’re not reaching your full potential. Luckily, there are a number of simple things you can do to boost your traffic. Try a few of these tips and see how quickly your numbers start to improve. Most important – analyze your website traffic data to see what’s working and what isn’t, and make changes accordingly.
